Add or change a language
Visualbook support adds, swaps or removes the second language. You decide on the language pair and translate the content after the change.
What you will have
A Czech-English manual with Czech at the main address and English at /en.
Steps
Decide what you want to change
Find your situation in the table below. Adding a second language is simple; changing the default language needs preparation.
Contact support
Send the manual’s address and the pair you want, for example “default English, secondary Czech”. Contact details are in Support and contact.
Wait for support to set the languages
Support sets the default language (at the main address
/) and the second language (at an address with the language code, such as/cs), converts the content and lets you know when it is done.Translate the content
The new language is filled with a copy of the default-language content – nothing is deleted. Then translate the texts page by page. See Automatic translation.
How to tell it worked
The manual’s header has a language switch and yourbrand.visualbook.pro/cs opens the home page in the second language.
Recommended approach for each situation
| Situation | What happens | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|
| Adding a second language | Content is copied from the default language. Visitors at the main address still see the default language. | Translate the pages after the change. Don’t announce the second language yet. |
| Removing the second language | The default language stays. No content conversion, no risk. | Just ask support. The second-language texts stay stored in case you turn it back on. |
| Swapping default and second language | The second language moves to the main address. | First translate everything into the future default language, then ask for the swap. |
| Removing the default language | The other language becomes the default. | In two steps: first swap the languages and finish translating, then remove the original language. |
| Changing the language of a single-language manual | The new language would appear at the main address straight away, untranslated. | In three steps: add the new language as the second one, translate, then make it the default. |
What happens to addresses when the default language changes
Page addresses at the manual’s main address come from the default language. When the default language changes, pages at the main address get addresses in the new language (/logos) and the original language moves under its code (/cs/loga). Page visit history is kept.
Links typed by hand inside texts, such as /tiskoviny/vizitky, no longer fit after the default language changes and need fixing.
Add redirects for important old addresses you have shared – see Page address and redirects.
Files, passwords and domains when swapping languages
Files, passwords and email domains are taken from the original default language when swapping. Files and links set to Unlinked keep their own value in each language.
What if…
- …the conversion ends with an error? Support fixes the error and runs the conversion again. Until then, the default-language content stays unchanged.
- …you want a removed language back? Its texts stayed stored. When it is turned back on, the shared fields are aligned with the default language.
